5 Roof Ventilation Myths That Are Costing DFW Homeowners Money

Stop Believing These Ventilation Myths

Attic ventilation is one of the most misunderstood aspects of home maintenance. These myths lead to wasted money, premature roof failure, and uncomfortable homes.

Myth #1: "More Ventilation Is Always Better"

Reality: Ventilation must be BALANCED. Adding more exhaust vents without matching intake creates negative pressure that pulls conditioned air from your home through ceiling fixtures, attic hatches, and can lights. You'll actually increase your energy bills.

The correct approach is a balanced ratio of intake to exhaust. Most manufacturers recommend 1 sq ft of net free ventilation per 150 sq ft of attic floor, split evenly between intake and exhaust.

Myth #2: "Power Attic Fans Save Energy"

Reality: The Department of Energy and multiple independent studies have shown that powered attic ventilators often INCREASE energy costs. Here's why:

  • They create strong negative pressure in the attic
  • This draws cooled air from your home through every gap in the ceiling
  • Your AC works harder to replace the lost cool air
  • The energy used by the fan itself adds to costs
  • Ridge and soffit ventilation, which use natural convection, are far more effective and cost nothing to operate.

    Myth #3: "Closing Attic Vents in Winter Keeps the House Warmer"

    Reality: Closing vents in winter traps moisture in the attic. In DFW, even our mild winters produce enough condensation to cause:

  • Mold growth on roof decking
  • Wet insulation (which loses its insulating value)
  • Wood rot in structural members
  • Ice damming in the rare DFW freeze event
  • Ventilation should remain open year-round. Your insulation — not your ventilation — is what keeps your house warm.

    Myth #4: "Roof Vents Let Rain and Snow In"

    Reality: Properly designed and installed ridge vents use baffles and weather filters that prevent rain and snow intrusion. External baffles deflect wind-driven rain, while internal filters provide a secondary barrier.

    In over a decade of installations in DFW, we've had virtually zero rain intrusion issues with quality ridge vent products. The key is using the right product and installing it correctly.

    Myth #5: "My Roof Has Vents, So My Ventilation Is Fine"

    Reality: Having vents doesn't mean they're working. Common problems we find in DFW homes:

  • Soffit vents blocked by insulation (no intake)
  • Soffit vents painted shut
  • Mix of exhaust types that short-circuit airflow
  • Insufficient total ventilation area
  • Vents on only one side of the roof
  • We test ventilation as part of every roof inspection. Many homes with visible vents have less than 50% of the ventilation they need.

    The Right Way to Ventilate

  • **Continuous ridge vent** — The full length of the ridgeline
  • **Continuous soffit ventilation** — Either continuous strip vents or spaced individual vents
  • **Baffles at every rafter bay** — To keep insulation from blocking soffit vents
  • **Consistent system** — One type of exhaust (don't mix ridge vents, powered vents, and turbines)
